AORN has an Associate Editor opening in our Outpatient Surgery Division, located in Malvern, Pennsylvania.

Overview:

Outpatient Surgery is a practical, how-to monthly magazine read by the nurses, surgeons and anesthesiologists who work in hospitals, freestanding ambulatory surgery centers and physicians' offices. We are looking for a talented newspaper reporter or magazine editor to join our talented staff at our beautiful offices in suburban Philadelphia.

Position Summary:

The Associate Editor is responsible for planning and ghostwriting feature articles and departments for Outpatient Surgery Magazine and for writing news stories for Outpatient Surgery’s weekly e-mail newsletter and daily news alerts. The Associate Editor provides exceptional reporting by identifying and seeking out subject matter experts and clinical practitioners in the ambulatory surgery field, interviewing them by phone, and ghostwriting practical, how-to articles and informative news stories to ensure Outpatient Surgery Magazine is the most widely ready magazine in the ambulatory surgery business industry.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans for the drafting of monthly magazine’s feature articles, supplements, news stories and weekly e-mail newsletter and daily news alerts to ensure deadlines are met.

  • Sources and identifies subject matter experts for magazine’s assigned feature article topics and schedules phone interviews to gather information.

  • Using expert reporting skills, ghostwrites practical, compelling “how-to” articles, based on information obtained from interviews with subject matter experts.

  • Adheres to Outpatient Surgery Magazine’s conversational writing style and ensures ghostwritten articles accurately reflect and clearly convey subject matter experts’ thoughts, perspectives, and experiences.

  • Based on Director of Publishing’s editorial review, makes requested edits to articles as needed.

  • Reports on breaking news as needed using the company’s website.

  • Writes other smaller 1- or 2-page departments based on information gathered through interviews with doctors and nurses.

  • Proofreads content.

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communication, or related field.

  • Minimum two years experience working for a newspaper, magazine, or trade publication as a reporter and/or writer.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters in Journalism preferred.

  • Experience working in the healthcare and/or surgical industry preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Proficiency with MS Word, Quark, and other similar technology/software

  • Excellent listening skills

  • Ability to extract key information and points from interviews; strong note-taking skills

  • Strong reporting and conversational-style writing skills

  • Resourceful with researching and seeking out subject matter experts

  • Tenacity and persistence to call upon subject matter experts and compel them to be interviewed

  • Attention to detail and strong editing skills

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to quickly build rapport with doctors and nurses who are called upon for interviews

  • Ability to multi-task and work on multiple competing assignment deadlines at once

  • Strong organization skills

  • Self-directed and able to work independently with little supervision or guidance

  • Ability to demonstrate and hold others accountable for organizational values of: communication, quality, innovation and collaboration.
