Founded in 1955, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Einstein) is one of the nation's premier institutions for medical education, basic research and clinical investigation. A full-time faculty of more than 1,900 conducts research, teaches, and delivers health care in every major biomedical specialty. The college has some 730 medical students, 193 Ph.D. students, 106 MD/Ph.D. students and 275 postdoctoral fellows.

Einstein's major strength, in addition to training physicians and scientists, is its science. During fiscal year 2017, the faculty's consistently high level of scientific achievement resulted in the awarding of nearly $175 million in peer-reviewed grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Einstein is part of Montefiore Medicine Academic Health System, an integrated academic delivery system comprising seven campuses, including 11 hospitals, a multi-county ambulatory network, a new state-of-the art "hospital without beds", a skilled nursing facility, school of nursing, home health agency, and the state's first freestanding emergency department. The Assistant Managing Editor of Publications primarily supports the external communications efforts of the Philip and Rita Rosen Department of Communications and Public Affairs at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. The position focuses on overseeing the editorial process for the College of Medicine's major print and online publication, Einstein magazine. The assistant managing editor has solid editorial experience, preferably in print publications.

This full-time staff position reports to the department's Director of Strategic Communications and Media Relations and works closely with the Associate Dean of Communications and Public Affairs and the Director of Science and Research Content.


  • * Oversee the editorial process of Einstein magazine, the College of Medicine's major print and online publication

  • * Manage editorial logistics for multiple articles and priorities. Oversee procedures, methodologies and internal schedules for project management.

  • * Maintain editorial and production timeline, ensuring deadlines are communicated clearly, flagging potential problems early

  • * Develop and pitch story ideas; write content and/or assign writers.

  • * Oversee freelance writers and copyeditors. Provide instruction on story tone, format and style, per the institution's style guide. Make initial evaluation and recommend edits.

  • * Traffic manuscripts to faculty/staff, development department, copy editor, deans and creative services

  • * Review and track all changes/corrections; confer with editorial team members to implement and/or adjudicate edits

  • * Help prepare online version of the magazine, including ensuring accurate translation from final print version, inserting hyperlinks and developing SEO terms

  • * Co-lead weekly meeting with editors, creative services and development department

  • * Coordinate with colleagues in social media and communications to promote publication via e-blast, social media and Einstein homepage

  • * Create surveys to measure effectiveness of publications; analyze and report results

  • * Generate story ideas and write articles for the Einstein website, in collaboration with director of strategic communications and media relations and director of internal and web communications

  • * Work with director of strategic communication on monthly e-newsletter, Connections.

  • * Stay current on trends in research, medicine and medical education

  • * Oversee and complete special projects, including awards submissions, information gathering for external departments, and other duties as assigned

  • * Work on professional development goals to improve skills


Bachelors' degree required; advanced degree preferred.

At least 2-4 years of editorial experience and/or project management experience in publications

Experience working in an academic medical or research institution, higher education, healthcare-focused public relations firm, or related nonprofit desirable

  • * Strong writing skills, able to adapt tone for subject and platform

  • * Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated sense of judgment

  • * Proficient with Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel
