General summary/purpose:

The position has two aspects: one of Managing Editor for the Journal Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology and one of Editor-in-Residence for the Division

Specific duties & responsibilities:

Managing Editor for the journal Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology :

Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology (CBN) is the official journal of the Society for Behavioral and Cognitive Neurology. CBN is a clinical subspecialty journal focusing on advances in the neurologic understanding of conditions that affect thinking, learning, memory, communication, and behavior. CBN welcomes all types of submissions that address clinical research, patient care, education, or professional advancement. The readership is primarily neurologists, neuropsychologists, and psychiatrists. CBN is a quarterly hybrid open access journal that is published both in print and online.

This aspect includes the following tasks: Run editorial office’s administrative operations. Oversee submission of manuscripts, peer review, post-acceptance editing, and proofreading. Report to and serve as gatekeeper for the editor-in-chief so he can focus on evaluating quality of submissions. Conceptualize, prospect for, and commission new material for publication. Develop and maintain database of peer reviewers; vet and select potential reviewers with the assistance of a part-time researcher. Write decision letters. Determine most journal policies, editorial style, and article format. Maintain style guide. Keep records of all editorial transactions. Communicate with and troubleshoot for authors, reviewers, editorial office colleagues, publisher’s staff, and Editorial Board. Plan contents of issues in consultation with the editor-in-chief; track status of each item throughout the production process. Edit accepted manuscripts and work closely with authors to finalize text, tables, figures, and supplemental digital content. Recruit, train, and supervise freelance or part-time manuscript editor, as needed. Collaborate with production staff in preparing proofs and proofreading. May write some editorials and feature articles. Update Instructions for Authors, front matter, and Society announcements. Meet production deadlines. Work with editor-in-chief to develop special issues, invited articles, and new features. Write reports. Draft updates for the journal’s website. Help draft marketing materials.

Editor-in-Residence for the Division:

This aspect includes the following tasks: Help Division faculty, fellows, students, and staff with all phases of their academic and other writing projects: planning; outlining; drafting; preparing tables, graphs, figures, and presentations; conforming to publication requirements; editing and polishing; helping coordinate multi-author and multi-component projects; submission and navigating of editorial review and revision; and proofreading. Projects are research papers, proposals, grant applications, posters, slide sets, reports, correspondence, etc. Mentor inexperienced writers.

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

Bachelor’s degree with minimum of two years of related experience.

Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Preferred qualifications:

Graduate degree in a scientific discipline related to neurology, neuropsychology, or cognitive science. Experience in prospecting for and commissioning new material for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Minimum of five years of related experience.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Experience in writing and editing of medical and scientific materials, ideally on neurologic topics. Ability to mentor inexperienced writers. Ability to edit for accuracy, structure, sequence, internal consistency, clarity, simplicity, missing elements, fact checking, reference checking, copyright issues (permissions, attribution, plagiarism), and format. Ability to edit and design tables, graphs, and figures. Expert proofreading skills. Familiarity with print and online production. Strong organizational, multitasking, project management, record-keeping, and problem-solving skills. Self-starter who can run programs independently and meet deadlines. Ability to deal effectively and diplomatically with authors of all languages and backgrounds when communication is solely by e-mail. Ability to collaborate with colleagues and supervise staff long-distance.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
