Summary:

The primary role of the Clinical Editor, Patient Engagement Clinical Content is to review and edit multi-media patient education to assure the medical accuracy of all patient education content. The Clinical Editor reviews all content received from authors and Subject Matter Experts, performs clinical updates based on defined update processes to ensure that the patient education content is accurate and current from a medical perspective. The Clinical Editor will partner with the Subject Matter Experts and internal team members to develop new multimedia evidence-based content.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review patient education documents and video to ensure accuracy of the clinical content. Critically review content produced by other clinical editors, external writers, and subject matter experts for medical and clinical accuracy and appropriateness, and to ensure clarity, accuracy, and consistency throughout the patient information content, including consistency between video and documents.

  • Update and review patient education content based on scheduled and triggered review cycles.

  • Assign and maintain clinical metadata of all patient education content (e.g., documents and video). Review clinical metadata to confirm adherence to established editorial policies and industry standard ontologies/clinical terminologies, and providing final clinical review of content.

  • Assist with addressing clinical content related customer tickets. Act as a resource, when needed, for clinical background of patient education content for non-clinical Content Team members, Customer Support Team, Sales, and Marketing.

  • Participate in national organizations and/or governmental bodies regarding patient education in order to establish Elsevier as a credible leader in the healthcare patient education arena. Occasional travel may be required for this purpose.

  • Other business duties or tasks as assigned by the VP/Editor in Chief, Patient Engagement Content.

  • Licensed Independent Provider, (eg.,APRN) Physician Assistant or Registered Nurse other healthcare professional with significant experience in the day-to-day care of patients required. Minimum Bachelor’s degree in nursing or related health care field plus 2 years or more recent experience in clinical practice. Master’s degree in health care strongly preferred.

  • Experience in authoring/writing on patient education, healthcare related quality, practice, regulatory requirements and developing patient education strongly preferred.

  • Excellent collaboration skills and experience working on teams

  • Strong communication skills to work collaboratively to ensure editorial content and projects are completed successfully.

  • Small project management skills consistent with establishing timelines, milestones, and leading small teams to achieve established deliverables on time

  • Demonstrates ability to leverage evidence-based medicine review techniques for evaluating clinical literature for appropriate study design, and statistical methods to provide appropriate QA and oversight of content generated by outside authors and reviews and content team.

  • Experience in informatics or working knowledge of electronic health care documentation and delivery systems preferred

  • Must have a demonstrated understanding of issues impacting healthcare system, health information technology and patient education, and a working knowledge of national and other standards and guidelines affecting the delivery of patient education content.

  • Demonstrates working knowledge of learner-centered or adult learning principles, health literacy, and Plain Language Principles.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability, sense of urgency; and ability to prioritize tasks, to work simultaneously on multiple projects, and to ensure completion of editorial team projects according to tight timelines.

  • Excellent command of the English language in both spoken and written forms

  • Strong writing skills with a clear concise style and excellent grammar, punctuation, and spelling; ability to work with templates using an electronic content management system.

  • High computer skill competency. Proficiency in a Microsoft Windows environment (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, at a minimum). Understanding of computer databases and standardized ontologies.
