We’re looking for a Deputy Washington Editor at https://https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/jobs/nyt-job-washington-desk.html to drive digital strategy, come up with creative new ideas and help shape the bureau’s coverage of the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court, the intelligence agencies, national security, domestic policy, healthcare and other issues. You’ll edit and manage many parts of the report, including news, enterprise, live coverage, video and interactive features. You should be able to develop and land stories — a rich tic-toc behind the strike on Syria at https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/07/us/politics/syria-strike-trump-timeline.html or a visual feature analyzing videos at https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/05/26/us/turkey-protesters-attack-video-analysis.html of the Turkish President’s security detail are good recent examples. You should be a collaborative leader who guides reporters, designers and developers.
Applicants should be collaborative and creative and come to the job with the experience, whether in newspapers, magazines or online, to hit the ground running.
Please submit a résumé, examples of previous work and a memo outlining their vision for the job. The memo is the most important part of the application. Some questions to wrestle with:
What audiences should we be focusing on?
How will our coverage fit into their lives, and how will they experience it?
How will we distinguish our coverage from other journalism in this space?
What will be the main vehicles for the coverage? Features? News?
What stories are we willing not to do?
