As an Executive Publisher you are responsible for maintaining, improving an expanding a high-revenue and high-impact portfolio of journals and related products in the competitive field of Biochemistry, within the STMJ Life Sciences, Social Sciences & Economics team.

This position has a specific focus on executing the strategy around Content Development, Open Access publishing and new (information) product development. You develop the strategy, help develop goals and monitor the progress within your portfolio of journal titles and related products and services, on a highly complex level. This position has direct line management over editorial support staff located in the Cambridge Office in Boston and as such requires someone who has a good track record and interest in people management.

You play an instrumental role in championing a positive team spirit within the editorial office and will be responsible for leading the team towards a more data driven culture.

As Executive Publisher you have a proven track record of demonstrating the ability to work independently and you are a lead example to and a coach/mentor for Senior Publishers, Publishers and Associate Publishers and Editorial Staff. You also have an ambassadorial role to work effectively with multiple stakeholders within the Elsevier organization such as Operations, Global Sales, and our Technology & Innovation teams.

The role reports to the Publishing Director and can be based in the US, NL or UK.

Your responsibilities

Portfolio Management and Development

  • Develop the strategy for the portfolio;ensure alignment with the department’s and STM Journals organization’sstrategies.

  • Work with editors, authors, editorialboards and the academic community at large to ensure sufficient copy flow ofrelevant, high quality manuscripts.

  • Negotiate and manage contractualrelationships with journal editors.

  • Continuous and pro-active maintenance ofthe existing portfolio, matching developments in the external marketplace,including the development of Open Access initiatives.

  • Continuous quality control and monitoringof all aspects of day-to-day editorial, production and publishing operationsand actively address improvements where required.

  • Meet portfolio related objectives withregards to content growth, articles market share, citation share, relativeimpact factor, editorial speeds and author and editor satisfaction.

  • Manage the editorial fees budget andprovide input to pricing processes.

Direct-Line Management

  • Set goals with direct report(s) and provideguidance on aligning goals to senior management strategy.

  • Adjust workflows and tasks to maximize theefficiency of the peer-review process with staff.

  • Be integral and a leader in staff’sprofessional development.

Relationship Management and Networking

  • Establish, manage and maintain excellentcontacts and networks with key external stakeholders, including editors,authors, society representatives, university leadership and industry, with aview to understanding their professional and organizational needs and ongoingmarket developments.

  • Establish, manage and maintain excellentcontacts with key stakeholders within the company, including editorial,production, publishing, marketing and technology teams, coordinating activitiesas they relate to the portfolio’s needs and development.

  • Innovation

  • Develop new content formats and new ways topresent content to the customers in collaboration with internal and externalstakeholders and business partners.

  • Develop new publishing formats and businessmodels.

  • Develop new peer review formats andinitiatives.

Business Development

  • Identify and map market needs and businessopportunities.

  • Develop and where feasible acquire newproducts and services, including society journals, platforms, databases andconferences.


  • PhD or University degree in a relevantscientific field an advantage, preferably in the life or health sciences.

  • Minimum 7+ years Scientific Publishingexperience.

  • People management experience.

  • The ability to build, nurture and manageeditorial boards is a must.

  • Strong commercial and negotiation skills.

  • Knowledge of the publishing process andrelevant market developments.

  • Knowledge of relevant parts of thescientific world and its sociology.

  • Proven track record of successful revamp(s)of journals in competitive areas

  • Proven track record of full awareness ofapplications and remaining up to date with Technology, Social Media and contentenhancement in the scientific arena.

  • Excellent networking skills, financialawareness and business management skills.

  • Willingness to travel 25% of the time.
