Purpose of the job:

To deliver editorial services to authors, reviewers and editors according to the requirements of the journal and publication ethics, providing a high level of proactive service. To oversee the efficient operation of the editorial office and administer the review process for assigned journals. To modify the workflow and practices of assigned journals as required and amend relevant editorial systems accordingly.

This role is full-time.

Main Activities and Responsibilities

Editorial process

  • To deliver editorial services to authors, reviewers and editors in accordance with the specific requirement of each journal. Manage the Editorial process with the objective of reducing the lead time from submission to decision, overseeing editorial process at all stages as follows:

  • New submissions and revised submissions

  • Review process

  • Decision process.

  • Ensure all submissions comply with journal and Elsevier policies and that policies are adhered to during the review process in place prior to publication.

Support & reporting

  • Support and assist authors, reviewers and editors in the use of the Elsevier editorial systems, advising Editors of functionality and enhancements.

  • Suggest and implement changes (workflow/configuration) to optimize performance of journal workflow.

  • Trouble shooting/providing feedback to the Researcher Support and Technical Support Teams.

  • Provide Editors and Publishers with informal and documented updates/reports of the journal’s performance.

  • Generate journal reports for Editors and Publishers on a monthly basis, for Board meetings and ad hoc reports as required.


  • Represent Elsevier professionally in all communication with the Journal community.

  • Update and advise external customers, authors, reviewers and editors with accurate and appropriate journal, submission and system information.

  • Respond to queries from Editors, Reviewers and Authors within department best practice lead times.


  • Work effectively as part of the Team to achieve individual and Team objectives, sharing knowledge and skills.

  • Provide support within Team.

  • Effective liaison with Publishing and Operations colleagues.

  • Build and maintain effective relationships.

Functional and Technical Competencies

  • Experienced in the use of Windows applications including Microsoft office programmes.

  • Submission system expertise following training

  • Accuracy (attention to detail)

  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experiences (and any other requirements)

  • A good general standard level of education.

  • Knowledge of publishing process.

  • Experience of professional communication, email, telephone, face to face.
