New York Times Software Engineer – Publishing Pipeline Team in New York, New York

Job Description

The New York Times is seeking a Software Engineer for the Publishing Pipeline team. The Publishing Pipeline team is reinventing the way digital content is published and consumed by our applications.

Historically the The New York Times has managed a large number of Content Management Systems that produce content, places where content is persisted, and APIs which distribute it to end clients. The Publishing Pipeline aims to greatly reduce the complexity of publishing and consuming NYT content by centralizing published content and provide simple, open and flexible access to it.

This is a high-impact, greenfield project that will enable faster product development cycles and reduce architectural complexity in the organization. If you are a driven problem solver who wants to wrap your head around some truly interesting software problems, this position is for you.

You’ll be exposed to recent technologies and techniques, such as:

  • Apache Kafka

  • gRPC and Protocol Buffers

  • Google Cloud Platform

  • Docker and Kubernetes

  • Continuous delivery with Drone

Recommended skills / characteristics include the following:

  • Have a B.S. in computer science or a related field

  • 5+ years experience in Software Engineering or related role

  • Generally familiar with back-end web technologies and APIs

  • Good knowledge of Java and the JVM.. Experience/interest in Go or Python a plus.

  • Comfortable approaching unfamiliar languages and technologies

  • Experience with Linux and the command line

  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills

Responsibilities will include

  • Take on a wide range of technical tasks not limited to programming, such as automating CI/CD pipelines, working with Cloud services and APIs, writing technical documentation

  • Assist other teams with integrating with the Publishing Pipeline

  • Operations/devops

  • Design and architect elegant solutions in collaboration with other teams
