Hospital for Special Surgery Managing Editor in New York, New York
The Managing Editor reports to the Senior Director of Education Marketing and Digital Communications with a secondary report to the Senior Vice President, Global & Academic Affairs/Executive Editor the HSS Journal. He/she is responsible for managing Hospital for Special Surgery professional education publications, the HSS Journal and Grand Rounds from HSS, Managing Complex Cases. The Managing Editor oversees operations of both professional publications including manuscripts from submission through peer review and publication, budget, promotion and marketing.
Specific responsibilities include:
Process all incoming manuscripts and initiate the peer-review process.
Manage electronic content management system, Editorial Manager (EM), database for the HSS Journal.
Provide editorial and organizational support for the Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editors of the HSS Journal.
Interface with the HSS Journal publisher to ensure production and marketing schedules are adhering to established work plans.
Collaborate with the Education Marketing & Digital Communications Department on journal advertisements and visuals for marketing and promotions.
Coordinate and assist with the content development and marketing strategies for the HSS Journal and Grand Rounds from HSS, Managing Complex Cases.
Explore opportunities to further promote and extend reach of HSS professional publications.
Manage vendors, consultants, schedules, and processes to ensure timely publications.
Develop three annual HSS Journal webinars with the Editor-in-Chief including articulating statement of need, educational gaps and learning objectives to fulfill CME application elements.
Assist editor of Grand Rounds from HSS, Managing Complex Cases to arrange issue themes and case selection.
Manage production schedule including case submissions and associated images for three issues of Grand Rounds from HSS, Managing Complex Cases publication.
Review editorial content and ensure appropriate reference style and image citations for cases submitted to Grand Rounds from HSS, Managing Complex Cases publication.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Science, Public Health or related field
3-5 years’ experience in peer-reviewed scientific/medical publishing
Experience with a content management system preferably Editorial Manager
Demonstrated fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation
Proven knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines
Superior communication skills including strong writing abilities
Experience using social media marketing to promote journal articles, issues and activities
Proficient in Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel, Adobe Acrobat Pro and Photoshop
Experience with ACCME accreditation process, developing CME applications, programs and webinars
Exceptional organizational skills and aptitude for attention to detail skills
