The ideal candidate will have experience as a copy editor with a developed sense of prose style and grammar, technical editing experience and outstanding communication skills.

Responsibilities :

  • The General Editor (Copy) will typically edit one or two feature-length articles and several shorter blog posts per day. The job may also occasionally entail working with FiveThirtyEight’s interactive news team, editing the text of longer-term projects. The copy editor will routinely copy edit charts and graphics.

  • The job is based in New York City, and will require a significant office presence. Hours will be variable depending on the demands of the news cycle, and will sometimes require night and weekend work.

Basic Qualifications :

  • The individual in this position must be fluent in the FiveThirtyEight voice. Candidates must be able to demonstrate they are gifted in editorial speed and news judgment.

  • The candidate must be extensively familiar HTML as well as AP style.

  • Knowledge of a broad array of topic areas pursuant to FiveThirtyEight’s major verticals, such as news, politics, sports, science, culture and economics.

  • The candidate must be comfortable working with and checking the accuracy of numbers.

  • The job requires a self-starter who is capable of managing a heavy workload and who has excellent time management skills. Reliability, creativity, and work ethic are a must.

  • Minimum of 3 years of editing experience.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • A background in mathematics/statistics and technical editing.

  • Five or more years of copy editing experience at a fast-paced digital or print news outlet.

  • Experience in curating and producing content for digital platforms.

Required Education :

  • Bachelor’s degree
