New York Times Director, Program Management, Publishing and Backend Technology in New York, New York
The New York Times seeks a Director of Program Management to lead strategic projects, manage a project management team, and support day-to-day operations in the Publishing and Backend Platforms portfolios.
You’ll be at the forefront of publishing technology, responsible for the execution of projects in the digital publishing systems and backend platforms we use to create and deliver New York Times content to all our mobile, web and third-party platforms. You'll play a key role as we refactor our platforms to publish entirely new forms of digital stories, personalize our news mix for different audiences and modernize their technical foundation.
As Program Director, you will be a core member of your portfolios’ leadership teams, bringing expertise in project management and operations to the definition and execution of the group’s strategy.
Ideally, you have
A passion for leadership and a proven talent for coaching, building consensus and driving change.
The experience and wisdom to lead project teams and manage risks, and have shipped multiple complex products on time and on budget. You can take ownership of complicated efforts and mediate between competing interests and personalities to get alignment and motivate change.
Superb communication skills, including the ability to communicate between technical and non-technical contributors, and between project teams and senior leadership.
Work closely with leads to formulate team strategy, tie the strategy to roadmap activities, and ensure that the roadmap is followed and adjusted as needed.
Manage a team of 5-8 Project Managers and Program Managers. Coach and mentor on project management, agile development and continual improvement.
Partner with cross-disciplinary teams and stakeholders to ensure that product goals are clearly defined and are being met. Manage dependencies between teams, and keep projects moving in step by making sure schedules, resources, and communication are in sync.
Manage portfolio communications for key stakeholders. Ensure issues and risks are identified and handled swiftly and that key decisions are communicated appropriately.
Work closely with fellow project management colleagues to ensure that cross team issues and blockers are dealt with swiftly.
Resource and capacity management; monitor program resources and budget
Champion and support agile software development practices, and tailor that process to each program and project team. Scale agile processes as necessary to promote transparency.
May act as day-to-day project manager on major initiatives within a program or particular business line.
6+ years relevant work experience in project and program management
1+ years supervisory experience
Experience with software development projects; an ability to learn technical concepts quickly and communicate those concepts to others
Certified Scrum Master (CSM) and knowledge of Jira, Confluence, Rally, Version One, or other equivalent project management software tools
