Advertised Summary Job Description

The Digital Editor at CJR should be a highly skilled, thoughtful, and efficient editor who will have primary responsibility for directing our online coverage. The incumbent must have excellent news judgement and leadership skills and be familiar and comfortable with all aspects of digital publishing. Like many publications, CJR is seeing a sizable increase in its digital audience, and its success in this space is critical to its continued impact. The Digital Editor will have day-to-day oversight of our entire digital report, playing a crucial role in all aspects of the digital magazine.

Among this editor's key tasks will be generating story ideas, as well as quickly evaluating pitches and shaping them into relevant and thought provoking stories for our website. He or she must excel at coaching staff writers and freelancers at the pitch stage and working closely with them throughout the editing process to produce timely and engaging off-the-news pieces, idea-driven essays and deeply reported magazine stories. The Digital Editor will also generate ideas for how to present these stories to our readers, including visual elements and multimedia; will become familiar with our online publishing system; and may help with graphics, audio and video production, social media outreach, and other tasks as needed.

As the primary editor shaping CJR's online content, the Digital Editor should be an unconventional thinker who's not afraid of big ideas. CJR will rely on this editor to recruit and retain talented contributors who represent diverse views and bring a variety of voices and experiences to our media coverage. This editor must also be comfortable and adept at managing members of our small editorial staff, with a keen eye to balancing speed with judgment. The imperatives of the web often seem to prioritize the former, but CJR's reputation rests on the latter. The ideal candidate will display maturity, curiosity, and a thirst for the new, while keeping CJR's digital coverage in line with its history and distinctive role as both a watchdog and a sort of North Star for journalism, in all its forms.

CJR's ambition is to produce distinctive online media coverage that sets the terms of the broader conversation about one of the most important and closely watched topics of our time. The Digital Editor will lead our efforts in this area.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

Develop and oversee CJR's day-to-day digital coverage.

Develop innovative outreach and engagement strategies for CJR and contribute to the conception and execution of a range of projects including podcasts, newsletters, and the magazine's Tow and Trump verticals.

Generate story ideas for the CJR website and match them with staff members or talented freelancers. Help devise and execute creative digital approaches to covering journalism beyond the traditional story format.

Recruit new writers for significant idea-driven pieces, and build a dynamic, talented pool of regular writers, photojournalists, and designers to contribute to CJR's website.

Edit stories for the web.

Represent CJR on media broadcasts and within the Journalism School, helping to build the magazine's brand and forge connections with others in the field, as needed.

Partner with the managing editor and editor and publisher in supervising the work of other staff members to ensure that CJR standards and quality are kept at consistently high levels.

Performs other related duties as needed.

This is a grant-funded position, with continued employment contingent on the availability of funding and performance.

Minimum Qualifications for Grade

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant

Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent related experience required.

A high-impact journalist with at least 3-5 years related experience.

A demonstrated ability to help writers develop sharp, analytical pieces, with original thinking and compelling prose.

A strong editorial leader with energy and ideas in abundance; an analytical and creative mind made sharp by his or her deep and varied experience in media, both in the United States and internationally.

A strong grounding in digital is crucial, especially a demonstrated ability to produce work that has impact on all platforms. This isn't about writing code, it's about having a deep appreciation of the medium and what success looks like.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to help this person lead a small team into doing their best, most creative work. Previous management experience is preferred but more crucial are the core skills that make good leaders.

A successful candidate will have an insatiable interest in the media. There are few times in the history of our profession that have been more dynamic than the period we're living through now. This is a wonderful perch from which to watch history unfold.

Experience working in nonprofit media, engaging with funders and board members, and writing grants, is preferred.
