Dow Jones Analytics & Audience Editor in NEW YORK, New York

Job Description:

The Analytics & Audience Editor designs and runs audience data tools, research, and insight in the newsroom and uses them to educate and guide newsroom leaders and the staff at large on how the data can help in decisions about coverage and products.

Tasks/Responsibilities (team)

Analysis and Audience

  • Define and lead a team that performs effective WSJ-specific audience analysis across an array of tools and platforms (Parse.ly, Omniture, Crowdtangle, PublishCheck, Facebook Insights, Google Search Console, etc.).

  • Constantly evaluate new and innovative insight and analysis methods and tools as they are used at other news organizations and in the business world.

  • Analyze primary and third-party data sets and translate search, social, referral and behavioral data into understandable and actionable insights for the newsroom using modern data-visualization tools and dashboards.

  • Create and manage Wall Street Journal-specific primary market and audience research in cooperation with the Dow Jones Customer Intelligence & Analytics team

  • Interpret the findings of that research to editors leading products across our portfolio and coach them on what to do with that knowledge.

  • Consult with our corporate colleagues as they design and conduct audience-funnel analysis. Interpret the results for the newsroom.

  • With the Digital News Editor and the Off-Platform team and the Mobile and Browser platform editors, create and implement a comprehensive strategy to grow our audience.

  • Give newsroom leaders regular feedback on performance measures and trends.

  • Work with senior news leaders to set KPIs and goals for each coverage area.

  • Set standards for individual and team performance – ongoing and in regular performance reviews.

  • Contribute to the shaping and management of staff-development programs.

  • Identify high-potential members of the team and ensure they are effectively developed.

  • Advise product and tech teams on product improvements that will affect user engagement, insight and experience.

  • Innovate and be entrepreneurial in developing new audience metrics and measures

Key Attributes/Knowledge/Experience

  • Deeply customer and market driven

  • Ideally, has five to to seven years’ experience in a data team for a digitally focused media or news organization, or a successful online retailer or e-commerce company, and has knowledge of news-industry imperatives.

  • Highly proficient in data-analytical tools, e.g. Omniture/Adobe Analytics, Parse.ly, SQL/Google BigQuery, Reporter Builder, Facebook Insight, Twitter and LinkedIn Analytics, Google Analytics

  • Proficient in competitive research tools such as ComScore, SimilarWeb

  • Skilled in Microsoft Office / Google Docs (including pivot tables, charting and analysis of large data sets, PowerPoint / Keynote; Word, etc.)

  • Deep understanding of referral channels, such as search engines, social media, direct and emails.

  • Numbers-driven with a keen attention to detail, particularly around data validation, reporting and stakeholder communication.

  • Proven ability to train and clearly communicate knowledge of data analysis to others.

  • Experience with data extraction and reporting tools.

  • Data visualization knowledge.

  • Ideally, able to code in Python and R
