Position Title

Military Spouse Managing Editor (Full Time - Salary Exempt)

Position Purpose

  • Serve as the Military Spouse Editor by providing strategic oversight of all print and online content and serve as the Primary Point of Contact for Military Spouse Magazine

  • Contact person for the Military Spouse Event of the year program

Duties and Responsibilities (Activities)

Editor (70%)

Provide strategic oversight of all print and online content and serve as the Primary Point of Contact for Military Spouse Magazine

Topics

  • Monitor and seek topics of interest within the military spouse community and communicate information using print and digital mediums.

  • Work with Digital Marketing Specialist to ensure writers are writing about topics that are engaging and relevant to the community.

Voice

  • Review articles in raw edit form, to ensure the voice of the writer/theme is authentic.

Develop and Manage the Print Editorial Calendar

  • Schedule content to be published in Military Spouse magazine

  • Identify, coordinate and contract pieces that align with the company-wide content arc and align with the strategic brand goals, relate to current events, and are relevant to the military spouse community and are germane to the time of year.

  • Plan editorial content so that production and print deadlines are adhered to. Magazine production will work three issues in advance. Work closely with the lead art director on magazine production.

  • Consider budget items, current events, military spouse hot topics, partner and client branding goals in the construction of content.

Writing

  • Write content.

  • Develop story headlines and decks. Writer will provide headline and deck ideas, but Military Spouse Managing Editor must finalize.

  • Maintain relationships with freelancers and writers, soliciting their story ideas and assigning articles to them each issue.

Sales Assistance

  • Communicate and collaborate with the Neptune Holdings sales team to find clever ways to interweave partner messaging into the content.

Editing and Publishing

  • Copy edit articles for grammatical and context accuracy during the different stages of production.

  • Enter content into the Wordpress for Military Spouse partners and guest authors. Also enter all print content into Wordpress.

  • Edit daily articles in Wordpress prior to Digital Marketing Specialist publishing

  • Review marketing materials when requested.

  • Edit other Victory Media publications as needed, including G.I. Jobs and Vetrepreneur magazines.

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain information for all writers, manage the digital and print editorial budgets, etc.

Military Spouse of The Year and Military Spouse Town Hall Events (MSOY) (30%)

Oversight of the MSOY Program aspects of the two-day event.

  • Manage MSOY Budget and have regular meetings with Military Spouse Event Coordinator 1099 employee to make sure that all items are on track through MSOY

  • Work with Creative Director to hire photographers and communicate with him/her through the year

  • Work with Creative Director to set up photoshoots for all Branch Winners

  • Work with Creative Director to make sure that all signage is completed

  • Write Town Hall and MSOY scripts and timeline for the day down to the minute

  • Interview 6 branch winners for their individual writeups in the magazine and program guides

  • Procur congrats notes for MSOY winners from JCS spouses and past winners

  • Magazine write-up for overall winner

  • Arrange travel for all branch winners

  • Work with Creative Director on all printed event programs

  • Be present during MSOY Week to manage and assist in execution of the event

Qualifications

  • Education in journalism, public relations, communications, English or related field

  • At least 4 years professional experience

  • Demonstrable ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines on a daily, weekly and monthly basis

  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal) with professional partners and target audience

  • Ability to post and edit articles in WordPress and SEO knowledge

  • Knowledge of AP Style

  • Military knowledge preferred

  • Ability to work out of the Pittsburgh Headquarters; however, working remote will be considered
