To see accepted articles (research and review) through to publication for 51 issues of The Lancet and 12 issues of each of The Lancet specialty journals every year. To achieve and maintain the highest standards in publication of cutting-edge research and state-of-the-art review articles.

Main Activities and Responsibilities


  • Editing on-screen and deliver up to three articles (primary research and review material) and Comment/Correspondence as needed every fortnight. Lancet editing of copy consists of: rewriting of text when necessary; checking and clarification of scientific finding; redrafting of data for clear presentation; use of English; application of Lancet style; checking of proofs both on-screen and paper copies; checking and incorporation of authors' corrections; and reading of pages. Written and verbal negotiations with authors.

  • Liaison with Production, authors, and Senior Editors

  • Editing of figures and liaison with artists and authors

  • Editing of Fast-Track and expedited articles when required

  • Attend conferences and report matters of interest for World Report, Perspectives, or Comment sections of The Lancet

  • Checking of Web-only material

  • Participation in press week rota for specialty journals


  • Meet weekly targets while doing other tasks.

  • Other tasks consist of: checking Cover and Contents pages; writing Editorials; editing of Comment and Correspondence when necessary; administration of Department of Error; editing of Fast-Track articles when required; and attendance at weekly meetings with Editorial and Production departments, and Journal Office

Quality Control

  • Adherence to highest standards and the journal's agreed approach

  • Checking format of reports (original research and review material)

  • Checking data for accuracy, use of SI units, and clarity of presentation

  • Checking analysis of data (statistical tests used and presentation)

  • Checking proofs and pages for whole journal content

  • Reviewing Lancet style on a monthly basis
