The Economist group is recruiting a senior sub editor with responsibility for the sub editing and presentation of the content output produced by our Thought Leadership brand.

This content will include reports, articles, blogs and infographics, as well as the wording in micro-sites and hubs, as well as content produced for the EIU Perspectives website.

The senior sub-editor will cover the output of the global team, including EMEA, Americas and Asia and will have to organise their workflow accordingly.


In this role you would be expected to:

  • Provide on-screen sub editing, eg grammar, punctuation, spelling

  • Adhere with the Economist Intelligence Unit house style

  • Improve text by identifying inconsistencies and errors, both language and content, and resolving ambiguous passages in conjunction with editors

  • Check internal consistency of data, sub-editing tables, charts, infographics and social media content

  • Produce sub-editing survey questionnaires

  • Send both print and electronic products for final publication

  • Sub editing and publishing directly to the EIU Perspectives website as well as sub-editing wording on custom hubs/microsites

  • Complete final quality check on all content

Experience, skills and professional attributes:

To succeed in this role you must have:

  • Degree or equivalent (ideally in social science or English-language related topic)

  • Relevant work experience, that is, currently holding a position of Sub Editor

  • Experience within a commercial publishing environment

  • Knowledge of custom-built templates, including formatting and page layout

  • Interest in, or basic understanding of, general political, economic and/or industry specific topics

  • Proficient Word and Excel

  • Ability to work independently and organise your work flow to cover all the needs of the global team with a willingness to help others
