Focus on the Family Sr. Associate Editor, Brio in Colorado Springs, Colorado

The Sr. Associate Editor, Brio position exists to make creative contributions to Focus on the Family’s social media and/or Web-based, digital, or print content. The Sr. Associate Editor contributes as a writer and as an editor (acquisition, substantive, general, and line editorial duties) individually and through freelance writers and editors or by managing aspects of the editorial process under the guidance of the Editorial Director or Managing Editor, as required.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Creates original copy, organizes facts, interview quotes, and other material into the most compelling form

Edits manuscripts from in-house and freelance writers

Fully participates in editorial meetings

Develops article ideas that are consistent with Focus on the Family’s mission (i.e., Web-based, digital, social media, print)

Writes and creates content for Focus on the Family as required

Conducts firsthand research and maintains contact list with authors and sources

Edits and proofreads copy at appropriate stages of development to ensure quality consistent with Focus on the Family standards and principles

Maintains currency with target audience through extensive reading, personal contact, and Internet research

Consults with legal counsel on article content as required

May oversee freelance writers; assist in acquiring and developing new writers and/or content as needed

Coordinates with other departments as directed

Maintains and updates periodical websites on at least a monthly basis, creating new landing pages and cross-promotional areas as needed

Other Duties/Responsibilities:

Works closely with the Editorial Director or Managing Editor

Fills in for the Editorial Director or Managing Editor as needed

Performs other duties, including but not limited to duties as assigned, some of which may include the development and creation of a variety of copyrightable works (e.g., print, photography, film, music, visual arts, etc.) for distribution in any and all media and formats (such as television, radio, internet, wireless, DVD, satellite and digital) on a world-wide basis, all of which shall be for the benefit of Focus on the Family

Managerial Breadth/Scope of Job:

May have some oversight of Assistant or Associate Editor and/or Interns as needed

Working Environment/Physical Requirements:

Office environment Occasional travel at management request

Knowledge/Experience:

Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications, or English

3-5 years successful writing or editing experience

Working knowledge of FOF mission, philosophy, values, and objectives

Experience mentoring junior team members

Experience managing projects, estimating resources, timeframes and planning, etc.

Basic knowledge of HTML, CSS and other web concepts

Knowledge of website strategies and information design for targeting specific audiences

Knowledge of Best Practice Standards and Usability and Accessibility Testing

Experience using Content Management Systems and archiving web content

General marketing experience desired
